How difficult is the Salkantay Trek?

The trek is considered moderate to challenging. You’ll hike for several hours each day through high-altitude terrain, with the highest point being the Salkantay Pass at 4,650 meters / 15,256 feet. Good physical condition and preparation are recommended.

What is the best time to do the Salkantay Trek?

The best time is dry season, from April to October. June, July, and August have the best weather but are also the busiest.

Do I need a permit for the Salkantay Trek?

No special permit is needed for the Salkantay route itself, but entrance tickets to Machu Picchu are included and must be reserved in advance.

What’s the difference between the Salkantay Trek and Inca Trail?

The Inca Trail requires a permit and follows original Inca paths. The Salkantay Trek is more remote, less crowded, and features more natural scenery, including snow-capped mountains and jungle landscapes.

Is altitude sickness a concern?

Yes. Since you’ll reach high altitudes, it’s important to acclimate in Cusco for at least 2–3 days before the trek. Staying hydrated, eating light, and avoiding alcohol help.

What kind of accommodations are provided?

You’ll stay in tents at scenic campsites. All camping gear is provided and carried by mules or horses.

Are meals included?

Yes. The trek includes four breakfasts, four lunches, and four dinners, all cooked by local chefs. Special diets can be accommodated with advance notice.

Can I store my extra luggage during the trek?

Yes. Most tour companies offer free luggage storage in Cusco for items you don’t need on the trek.

Can I rent gear if I don’t have everything?

Yes. You can rent sleeping bags, trekking poles, inflatable mats, and more. Packages are available for added comfort.

How do I get back to Cusco after visiting Machu Picchu?

After your Machu Picchu tour, you’ll take a train to Ollantaytambo, followed by a private bus back to Cusco—all included in the package.
